Best Breast Milk Storage Bags and money saving tips!
Getting breast milk bags to pump and store your precious breast milk can get costly. Here are some breast milk storage bag recommendations and money saving tips.
For tips on Pumping, Handling and Storing Breast milk view our helpful guide.
To get the most out of each bag some moms will fill their bags to the highest allowed amount the bag will fill. For example if the breast milk bag highest capacity is 10oz she will fill to 10 oz instead of the recommended 4oz. This method is not recommended to do when considering the possibility of breast milk waste once thawed.
So what we recommend is that if you want to use less bags by filling up each bag, is that you only use a partial amount when feeding baby. Just pour 4oz-5oz out from the bag into bottle at first. Remember you can add more, but can’t take away.
Once baby is fed the milk from the bottle it is then contaminated by their saliva and bacteria gets into the milk in that bottle. For this reason all milk from that bottle must be consumed within one to two hours. Any remaining amount must be tossed or used for another purpose such as milk baths. So if you thaw 10oz only pour 4oz into bottle and if baby is still hungry you can add a little more. This will help reduce waste of precious breast milk.
The remaining thawed breast milk can stay in fridge for up to 24 hours after thawing. This means from the point all ice crystals are gone up to 24 hours. Just be sure to finish off thawed breast milk before that time.
You can save a lot of money this way. The bags may take up more space because they won’t lay as flat. So, you want to be sure to have enough freezer space when deciding how much to put in each bag to freeze.
Now the question is what storage bags are best and how to save money on buying them.
I want to note the importance of price comparing and Amazon promotions. The prices on Amazon can go up and down depending on current market value and competitor pricing. I have noticed that sometimes it is more affordable to buy multiple of a lesser quantity than a bulk quantity to get the best deal. Here is an example:
Compare the costs with the image above and the totals here.
6oz 40 pack 1= 40ct for $10.99, 2 = 80 ct for 21.98, 4 = 160 ct for 43.96
The 6 ounce Kiinde packs are priced different base on quantity. However, if you buy bulk you are not saving money, you are spending more per count. You are better off buying multiple quantities of the 6 ounce – 40 pack than the bulk packs.
After choosing your quantity make sure to keep an eye out for any promotions and coupons. With the coupons it’s important to checkmark the coupon offer to get the discount. That can be done in either the product page or the check out page of your order.
In this example Kiinde bags are part of a Save $30 when you buy $100 of select items. So by buying the multiple quantity of the 40 pack and using this promotion that is a lot of money saved.
Amazon’s Subscribe and Save Feature:
I highly recommend signing up for the, Subscribe and Save, feature in Amazon to save up to 15% on eligible bags. I love Subscribe and Save and have several items shipped to me monthly and always qualify for the 15% off the 100 ct bags I order each month.
Our Breast Milk Bag Recommendations are:
#1: Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags, 100 count 6oz
These bags are great with laying flat and have many awesome features including the option to pump directly into the bags.
#2: Medela Breast Milk Storage Bags, 100 Count, Ready to Use Breastmilk Bags for Breastfeeding, Self Standing Bag, Space Saving Flat Profile, Hygienically Pre-Sealed, 6 Oz
These bags are close in quality and ability as the Lansinoh and are fairly close in affordability. Unlike Lansinoh these bags can stand up on their own and freeze flat.
#3: Dr. Brown’s 100 Piece Breastmilk Storage Bags 100ct 6oz
If you’re looking for a self-standing bag that is a little more affordable than the Medela bags but are still of good quality we recommend Dr. Brown’s breast milk bags. Just note they don’t lay flat to freeze very well as compared to the Lansinoh or Medela bags.
#4: Mother-K Breastmilk Storage Bag 300ml 50pcs, Automatic Temperature Indicator, Double Zipper Seal, Disposable Pouches
For moms wanting a breast milk bag that has a large volume for breast milk per bag. Mother-K bags can hold up to 300ml which is a little more than 10oz per bag. They are thick, can lay flat but the more the milk the bulkier they are when laid flat, and they can stand up really well on their own. They claim to have a double zipper but it feels more like a single zipper and can sometimes leak on the top seals. If you thaw and store upright that should not be an issue for breast milk loss.
#5: Kiinde Twist Pouch Breast Milk Storage Bags for Pumping, Freezing, and Feeding.
If you’re a mom who pumps on the go, at work, or doesn’t have time for dealing with cleaning bottles, measuring milk, pouring into bags and/or into bottles then you may really like these bags.
You can simply pump directly into these bags then when it’s time for baby to eat you can feed baby directly from these bags with the nipple attachment.
These bags do not store flat and can take up a lot of freezer room and are hard to store for that reason. If you are looking to create a freezer stash then these are not the best recommended bags. However, if you plan on using as you go then you may find these work great.
